Canes fall to Schenley Next Game - Sign
the Red Hurricane Report Guestbook "To be the best you must beat the best." That was the mission ahead of the Red Hurricanes as they face the Schenley Spartans at Taylor-Allderdice High School in the Squirrel Hill section of Pittsburgh. Schenley, the highest ranked AAAA team in western Pa. proved to be what they were made out to be, big and talented. The undermanned Canes (Mark Cook did not play due to an in school infraction) started out strong, energized by a huge fan following, but eventually succumbed to the Spartans 59-44. Schenley got on the board first at 7:35 on two free throws but the Canes tied it at 6:44 when Mark DeMonaco made two free throws from a technical foul called on the Spartans for hanging on the rim. After a Canes turnover, Schenley quickly scored to go back up by two. New Castle then made two baskets in a row, a three by Dom Joseph and a two by DeMonaco to grab a 7-4 lead. The Spartans responded with a 9-0 run to lead by six at 2:14. The Hurricanes went 3:23 without scoring until Hoover Gibson grabbed a loose ball and put it in and the Canes closed to within four with 53 seconds left in the period. Schenley then hit a three with just five seconds to play to lead 16-9 after one. New Castle had nine turnovers in the first period. Mostly as a result of an offensive strategy versus the Spartans 2-3 zone, that saw a Cane at the high post and the guards would try to get it to him so he could dish. Time after time the pass was deflected on its way in or out. As a result the Canes took only four shots in the period making three of them. The second period saw the Canes in the same offensive attack but this time the guards were taking the open three that resulted from the collapsing Schenley zone and the Hurricanes only turned it over five times. However the Canes didnt shoot well, making only two of 10 shots (1 of 7 threes). Joseph scored all seven of New Castles points in the quarter that saw Schenley out score the Canes 19-7. New Castle trailed at the half 35-16. Both teams turned up the defensive pressure in the third period with Schenley running a box and one on Joseph and the Canes starting to trap. Leon Ward hit a three to open the third but Schenley responded just 15 seconds later. Neither team scored for the next two minutes until the Spartans hit a three at 5:02. Schenley was next to score again but not for nearly two more minutes hitting a three to lead 43-19 with 3:07 left in the third quarter. Ward hit another three at 2:01 followed DeMarco with one at 1:13. Adam Billyk hit a jumper with 37 seconds to play to end a 6-0 Canes run to get the score to 43-27 after three periods. New Castle with no turnovers in the third period was continuing to play hard and the crowd which was always supportive was back in it as the fourth period began. Schenley made two free throws to open the fourth but then DeMarco hit a three from the corner and following a steal, Joseph scored and the lead was 14. Two more free throws by Schenley gave them a 16 point lead again but then Hoover Gibson scored at 5:52. Joseph hit one of two free throws to get the lead down to 13 with 5:30 left. The Canes missed several opportunities to narrow the gap during the next two minutes but neither team scored until the Spartans made a free throw at the 3:05 mark. Billyk then made a nice move to the basket, made the shot and was fouled. He made the free throw and with 2:41 to play the Canes trailed by just 11, 49-38. The teams exchanged pairs of free throws and the lead was still just 11 with 2:11 left. Schenley hit a basket at 1:58 and following a blocked shot they nailed a three to extend the lead to 14 and virtually put an end to any hopes of a Canes comeback. New Castle had only one turnover in the second half but shot only 37% in a game they need to shoot much better in able to win. Mark DeMonaco led the Canes with 15 points and Dom Joseph added 14.
