Tigers claw Canes Next Game - Tues Dec. 5 vs Ellwood City Sign
the Red Hurricane Report Guestbook Too tall, too experienced, too strong, too much. George Jr. Republic was just too much for the Red Hurricanes tonight in the finals of the Tip Off Classic at Ne-Ca-Hi Field House. The Tigers of GJR boasted a senior laden lineup that featured a 66" player who hails from Michigan and a 67" player who calls Texas home. The Canes gave GJR all they could handle for most of three quarters, tying the game at 36 with 3:37 to play in the third. But playing without Dom Joseph for most of the game due to early foul trouble caught up with the Canes and the Tigers pulled away for a 61-46 win. Mark Cook tried his best to keep the Hurricanes close scoring 22 points through three periods but the inside strength and rebounding of the Tigers did the Canes in. Cook hit a three to open the scoring for New Castle but then GJR ripped off six straight points. Cook hit another three to tie and the Tigers answered to go back up 11-6. Two free throws by Joe Carter got the Canes back to within two but three free throws by GJR made the score 14-9 after one quarter. Mark DeMarco nailed a three to start the second. GJR responded with two straight hoops go up by six. The Canes then out scored George Jr. 9-2 over the next 1:20 to take the lead 21-20. The lead was short lived however as a free throw and two quick baskets put GJR up by four. Cook hit a three to get New Castle back close but the Tigers out scored the Canes 5-2 during the last two minutes of the half to lead 30-26 at intermission. New Castle came out quickly in the second half with Joseph hitting a layup and Cook hitting another three and the Canes lead again, 31-30. This would be the last time the Canes would lead however. New Castle did tie it again at 36 with 3:37 to play in the third but a 13-4 run by the Tigers to end the quarter put them up 49-40. The Hurricanes scored only six points in the fourth as George Jr. extended their lead to the final score of 61-46. Mark Cook lead the Canes with 24 points, while freshman Chris Cain was the leading rebounder with three. .
