Wolverines cower in face of Hurricane Next Game - Fri. Dec. 8 vs Montour Sign
the Red Hurricane Report Guestbook Ellwood City entered tonights game at the Ne-Ca-Hi Field House with a two game winning streak resulting from winning the championship of the Kiser Classic. The Wolverines blew out Butler in the opening game and throttled Grove City in the finals. How good was this Ellwood team? New Castle hoping to rebound from a loss to George Jr. Republic was about to find out. Stefan Grundberg nailed a three to get things rolling for the Wolverines. After a hoop by Joey Carter, Grundberg scored again to put Ellwood up 5-2. Carter then hit a three tying the game. After that the Wolverines might as well have gone home. The Hurricanes held Ellwood to only four more points in the quarter while scoring 19. Carter and Dom Joseph each had five points and two rebounds in the period. Ellwood City did do one thing right, well it seemed right. They opened the game in a box and one defense with the chaser on Mark Cook. Cook worked mightily but managed only one shot. Cook left the game after just 2:08 of the first period with the Canes leading 11-7. With Cook out of the lineup the Canes went on an 8-2 run to end the quarter. The second period saw Cook back on the court. He hit a three to put the Hurricanes up 22-9 but picked up his second personal foul just 21 seconds later and was back on the bench. The Wolverines had accomplished their mission of making Cook a non-factor. However the Canes never missed a beat outscoring Ellwood City 11-4 the rest of the period and led 33-13 at the half. Cook reentered the game in the third quarter and Ellwood in a conventional defense had no way to stop him. He scored 12 points in the quarter as the Canes out scored the Wolverines 23-12 in the period. The benches were emptied in the fourth and the Canes won easily 63-39. Mark Cook finished with 18 points while Dom Joseph added 15 points and six rebounds. Anthony Ovial led Ellwood City with nine points. .
