New Castle Report

Tonight before a smaller than usual Hurricanes road crowd and a loud Latrobe following, the Canes rebounded from a poor second quarter and advanced in the WPIAL playoffs with a 58-46 win over the Wildcats at Ambridge High School.

Leading 9-3 after one period New Castle scored the first two points of the period and then didn’t score again for nearly six minutes. The drought was fueled by four turnovers and three missed shots on consecutive possessions. Latrobe meanwhile 10 straight points to take a 14-11 lead.

Dom Joseph finally stopped the bleeding at 1:41 and a basket by Mark DeMarco and then a ‘three’ at the buzzer by Mark Cook got the Canes to within one 19-18 at the half.

The third quarter saw the Hurricanes turn up the defensive pressure which created four steals by the Canes, and also saw Cook come alive with 12 points (two 3’s). DeMarco and Leon Ward each nailed a ‘three’ in the period and the Canes out scored Latrobe 23-12 to take a 41-31 lead after three quarters.

The Wildcats got as close as seven at the 3:05 mark before DeMonaco hit the first of his four free throws (7 for 7 on the night) in the fourth period. The Canes extended down the stretch on baskets by Joseph and Hoover Gibson.
