Canes grow up in win over Montour Next Game - Sat. Dec. 9 vs Center @ Ambridge Sign
the Red Hurricane Report Guestbook School was in session tonight at the Ne-Ca-Hi Field House for the young Hurricanes. The Canes have been learning their lessons well, having been schooled by George Jr. and applying what they learned versus Ellwood City. The maturation continued tonight against the Montour Spartans led by Penn. State recruit Daren Telsch. The 66" senior, back with his home school for the second season after spending a year on loan to Blackhawk. Montour started three seniors and a front line of 66", 64" and 61". It is only four games into the season but tonight was a big game and a bigger win. The Canes fell behind early but regained the lead partway through the first period, only to give it up five times and regain it quickly each time. Poor foul shooting plagued the Canes which kept the Spartans close throughout. Finally New Castle grabbed the lead for good early in the fourth period. Even then Montour stayed close making the Canes work all the way to the end. The Hurricanes got a well earned win 75-67. Montour scored first with two free throws just 30 seconds in. A basket off a Hurricane turnover quickly made it 4-0 Spartans. Joe Carter broke the ice for the Canes at 6:02 but another turnover and it was 6-2 Montour. Dom Joseph scored at 5:26 but again Montour answered right back. Mark Cook scored on a drive and was fouled. He made the free throw and the Canes were within one. A three by Cook on the Hurricanes next possession gave New Castle its first lead 10-8. Joseph followed with another score and the lead was four at 3:21. Montour outscored the Canes 7-4 to finish the first period but the Canes led by one, 16-15. Telsch hit a free throw to begin the second period to tie the score, but Mike Pagley nailed a jumper at 6:49 to put the Canes back on top. Joseph missed two free throws but Mark DeMonaco hit a three putting New Castle up by five. Four points by Montour brought them to within one. Carter then missed two free throws but Cook was fouled making the spread three. Telsch then hit two free throws and a hoop to give Montour the lead with 3:46 to play in the half. Another hoop extended the lead to three points but DeMonaco hit his second three of the period to tie it. That started a 9-0 run by New Castle. The Spartans scored the last four points of the half and Canes were up only 32-30 at intermission. Just as he did to begin the second period, Telsch scored to tie the game to start the third. Again the Canes responded as Leon Ward scored five straight points putting the Canes on top 37-32. Cook and Joseph combined for the Hurricanes next eight points while Montour scored six to stay close. 45-38 At 3:29 Telsch hit a three narrowing the lead to three. A New Castle turnover led to another Spartan score and on Montours next trip Telsch leaped high to grab an errant Montour shot and slammed it home, tying the score at 45 with 1:20 to play in the third quarter. Joseph got the Canes back the lead with 25 seconds to play but the Canes failed to extend when with just four seconds left in the period Cook missed two free throws. Telsch hit the first of two free throws to start the fourth period. He missed the second and three Canes went for the ball uncontested, only to knock it out of bounds. Montour took advantage and quickly scored taking lead out right at 7:13, for the first time since the first period. The Canes faithful were waiting to see how the youthful Hurricanes responded. And respond they did. Cook scored and was fouled. He hit the free throw only to be followed to the line by Carter. Carter hit both ends of a one and one, which was followed by baskets by Joseph and Ward. The Hurricanes defense had suddenly turned a one point deficit into an eight point lead, 56-48. The Canes pushed the lead to 63-54 with DeMonaco hitting both shots of a one and one but Montour came back with four straight points of their own. Joseph then made two free throws to extend to seven but again four more points by the Spartans made the lead only four, 66-62 with 1:23 to play. New Castles defense suddenly became impenetrable creating three straight turnovers by Montour and the Canes lead quickly grew to 11 with just 21 seconds left in the game. Cook made two free throws between a Montour basket and an across half-court three by Telsch to end the game. Making the final score 75-67. Mark Cook led four Canes in double figures with 21. Dom Joseph added 18 while Mark DeMonaco, playing his best game so far this year, scored 16 and Leon Ward added 10. Daren Telsch scored 29 for Montour. . * Starter
