Hurricanes chop Pine-Richland Next Game - Tues. Dec. 19 @ North Hills Sign
the Red Hurricane Report Guestbook Tonight at the New Castle High School Fieldhouse the Canes played the Pine-Richland Rams, a newcomer to both AAAA and Section 3. The Rams, led by Allan MacQuarrie a 61" sr. guard and 69 270lb sr. center Jason Capizzi, who is a Pitt. football recruit, were making their third ever trip the fieldhouse having been defeated by the Canes here last year. The third time was not the charm for the Rams as the Canes trailed early but regrouped and used their swarming defense to start out section play on the right foot with a 55-47 win. The Canes opened slowly unable to put together a run in the first period. The lead changed hands five time in the period with the Hurricanes finally pulling ahead to end the quarter up 12-10. The Rams Capizzi slammed home a dunk and was fouled to open the second. He drained the free throw and Pine-Richland was ahead at the 6:53 mark. Another basket by Capizzi and then a Ram three put P-R up by six 18-12 at 3:44. The Hurricanes had not scored in 7:25 before Mark Cook went to the line to shoot three free throws, having been fouled shooting a three. Cook made two of three to narrow the gap. The Rams missed two free throws to help the Canes then Hoover Gibson scored to get the Canes within two. One of two foul shots by Cook made the score 18-17 Pine-Richland at the intermission. A basket by Cook to begin the third period gave the lead back to the Hurricanes. Dom Joseph hit two free throws to up the lead then Joe Carter came alive. Carter hit a short jumper for two then fired from long range hitting a three and the Canes now led 26-18. The Rams finally got on the board with a basket at the 5:14 mark. P-R got the ball back inside to Capizzi who scored and was fouled. He made the free throw and the lead was just 29-26. Thats when Carter hit another three quickly followed by a three from Mark DeMonaco and the lead was nine at the end of the third quarter, 32-23. The fourth period opened with Cook again scoring to start a quarter, which he seems to have done so often this year already. DeMonaco then scored and the Canes had there largest lead of the game 36-23. The Rams MacQuarrie then tried to single handedly bring the Rams back. He twice drove to the hoop and was fouled. He converted the three point plays each time and that combined with a Ram three and in just 1:07 the Canes lead was just 4, 36-32. Cook made two free throws to stop the bleeding but Capizzi hit two more free throw and MacQuarrie a two and the score was now 38-36, Canes. But what happened next you had to see to believe. The Hurricanes just exploded. A basket by Cook started a great 1:26 of basketball. The Canes just smothered the Rams, stealing the ball or creating a turnover time after time. The Canes were runnin and the crowd was rockin. When the smoke cleared New Castle had scored 10 unanswered points to go up by 12, 48-36. MacQuarrie scored nine of the Rams last 12 points but Red Hurricanes made 5 of 8 free throws down the stretch to complete the victory. 55-47. Mark Cook led the Canes with 19 points while Joe Carter added 13. . * Starter
