The Hurricanes spotted North Hills the first period in tonight’s game then outscored the Indians 58-29 the over the next three quarters for a final score of 66-44 in a Section 3 match-up at North Hills High School.

New Castle shot just 2 for 14 during the first period and trailed 15-6 after one. The Canes were down 9-0 before Jamahl Lewis made a basket at 4:20 and didn’t score again until there was 1:08 left in the first.

North Hills hit a ‘three’ to start the second quarter and went on a 9-0 run to lead 24-6 at the 6:10 mark.

That’s when the Hurricanes added a ‘D’ and the Indians were HurricaneD. The Canes defense held North Hill to just 20 points the rest of the way.

Dom Joseph scored the Canes next five points to start an 18-4 run. Matt Conti keyed the run with two ‘threes’, each one answering an Indians basket. The Canes still trailed at the half but only by 6, 30-24.

The teams exchanged baskets to open the third until the Canes forced two turnovers and Jory Malone turned both possessions into points starting an 11-0 run by New Castle. During the run Lewis hit a hoop at 3:03 to give the Hurricanes the lead 36-35. Conti promptly hit another ‘three’ to put the Canes up by four.

North Hills outscored the Canes 6-2 to finish the period including a ‘three’ as the buzzer sounded. New Castle led at the end of three quarters 42-41.

The fourth period was all Hurricanes as this period they couldn’t miss. The Canes made all seven shots from the field, most lay-ups after breaking the Indian’s press and seven of eight free throws.

Lewis carried the Canes in the quarter scoring 13 of his 26 points. He also made a tremendous play after an Indian steal by stealing the ball right back and taking the ball himself from half court to the hoop with a very athletic play for the score.

New Castle held North Hills scoreless the last 3:11 while nine more for a final score of 64-44.

Jamahl Lewis led New Castle in scoring with 26 points. Matt Conti added 13, Jory Malone 12 and Dom Joseph 10.

The Canes played with out team leading scorer Mark Cook who was not with the team and will probably not be returning. Also not playing tonight was senior Tom Whitten has quit the team.
