Hurricane Edge North Allegheny Next Game Sign
the Red Hurricane Report Guestbook Thirteen points in the first quarter. Thirteen points total, the next three quarters. Canes Win. Huh? Surviving a horrendous shooting night the New Castle Red Hurricanes scratched and clawed their way to a one point win at home over North Allegheny. The Canes made only one field goal the entire second half while committing 7 turnovers and making 9 steals. The next to last steal came with 10 seconds to play by Jory Malone and the Hurricanes on top by one 26 -25. Malone was fouled but missed the free throw and North Allegheny went back down the floor. Then Dom Joseph stepped in front of a pass to nail down the win. New Castle jumped out to a 6 - 0 lead after three minutes of play on baskets by Joseph and Malone and two free throws by Mike Pagley. New Castle a much quicker team was playing a very active swarming zone. The Tigers moved the ball around the perimeter looking for a three, finally hitting one a the 3:35 mark. Two free throws by NA made the score 6 - 5. Matt Conti hit a three at 2:29 and Jamahl Lewis scored again for the Canes 45 seconds later, 11 - 5 New Castle. The Hurricanes then stole the ball and gave it back and stole it again setting up a Mark Cook slashing drive to the hoop with one second left in the period to give New Castle a 13 - 5 lead. The second quarter saw the Canes commit five turnovers and make only two field goals, which were threes by Cook and Pagley. North Allegheny outscored the Hurricanes 9 to 6 in the period. New Castle led at the half 19 - 14. Pagley hit a three at 7:17 to open the scoring for the Canes equaling the biggest lead of the night at eight. Neither team scored again until Lewis hit one free throw at 5:36. The Tigers scored 56 seconds later having been held scoreless for the first 3:20 of the period. The next 3:20 of the game had to be seen to be believed. The Canes missed their next shot but stole the ball right back. Then turned it over and stole it back. The Canes missed the next shot then stole the ball back and missed another shot. The Tigers scored at 1:22 and following another Cane turnover got within one point with 32 seconds left. New Castle had not scored for the last 5:36 of the period yet still clung to a one point lead, 23 -22 after three. After several more exchanges to begin the fourth quarter North Allegheny made a free throw at 5:25 to tie the game. A jump ball situation after a Cane miss gave the ball back to the Tigers they took their first lead 25 - 23 with a basket a 4:44. Another wild sequence saw the Canes miss, then NA turn it over, then the Canes miss again. New Castle then stole the ball back only to have their next shot blocked and then the Canes stole it back again. After the steal Matt Conti broke to the hoop only to be intentionally fouled. Cook hit one of his free throws and the Canes had broken an 11:19 scoring drought and getting the Hurricanes back to within one. The Canes missed again but NA turned it back over to New Castle at 1:41. The Canes miss fired again giving the ball back to the Tigers. Trailing by one point the Hurricanes had to foul and sent North Allegheny to the line with 30 seconds to play. North Allegheny missed the free throw with Malone grabbing the rebound. New Castle got the ball back and drove down the court with Cook slashing to the hoop and getting fouled. Cook went to the line to shoot two with 19 seconds left. He drained both of them and New Castle had the lead 26 - 25. With NA working for a shot Malone knocked the ball away and was fouled with 10 seconds left. He missed the free throw but Joseph grabbed another Tiger pass to end the threat. Mike Pagley led the Canes in scoring with eight points while Cook added seven. Jory Malone had seven rebounds.
