Last week on his radio show, Coach John Sarandrea said that this years team could win every game or lose every game. Tonight we saw the lose every game side.

Facing Aliquippa at Robert Morris College in the Block Party 99 Classic, the Canes proved Murphy’s Law to be correct. "Anything that can go wrong will go wrong." Of course a decent Aliquippa team had something to do with it but the Canes played poorly losing to the Quips 83-64.

Aliquippa opened the scoring with two free throws and never trailed, in fact the Canes never again got as close as two points. New Castle unable to handle the Quips full court pressure turned it over on their first possession and Aliquippa made it 4 - 0. The Canes turned it over again on their next possession but Aliquippa missed at their end. Mark Cook finally got the Hurricanes on the board at 5:33. Aliquippa then made it 6 - 2 at 5:19.

During the first period the Canes had 11 possessions that resulted in no points, five turnovers and six missed shots. After one period Aliquippa led 23 - 8.

The second period was not much better as the Canes could still not buy a bucket. New Castle’s defense was better in spurts during the second. They allowed the Quips only five points in the first three minutes of the period although New Castle only scored four.

The Canes caused three Quip turnovers and scored seven points in the next 1:30 but still trailed 31-19 at 3:31. Aliquippa then went on a 13 - 5 run to end the half and led at intermission 44 - 24.

Aliquippa extended its lead in the third quarter again taking advantage of New Castle turnovers. A bright spot for the Hurricanes was the play of Jamahl Lewis who had eight of the 12 points scored in the period. After three the score was 61 - 36 Aliquippa.

New Castle continued to play hard throughout the fourth quarter as they outscored the Quips in the quarter 28 - 22, but the game had long since been decided.

Hurricane Breezes:

Lewis had nine more points in the fourth and finished with 22 for the night. Mike Pagley also hit double figures with 14. Quentin Walker and Qualin Davis both saw their first varsity action of the year tonight.

New Castle wore a red version of their Cincinnati Bearcat’s like uniforms for the first time tonight.

Earlier in the evening Pittsburgh Schenley topped Hopwell 75 - 62 and Pine-Richland beat Sto-Rox 62 - 49.
