the Red Hurricane Report Guestbook Having lost a lead last Saturday to George Jr., the Canes made sure that didnt happen tonight at Ellwood City. New Castle trailed for most of the second and third periods before grabbing the lead late in the third. Ellwood threatened early in the fourth but the Canes held on and iced it in the end when Mark Cook and Jory Malone each made both ends of one and ones. Hurricanes top the Wolverines 64 -56. Malone led the Hurricanes with 18 points while Chris McKnight added 17 and Dom Joseph 14. New Castle opened a six point lead early but Ellwood City recovered, going on a 9 - 0 run and taking a 15 - 12 lead with 1:12 left in the first period. Jory Malone hit a three as the period ended to pull the Canes into a tie after one quarter. A three point play by Ellwood started the second period scoring. The Wolverines were ahead 24 - 20 when Malone hit five straight points to give New Castle the lead. Ellwood City then outscored the Canes 8 - 2 to end the first half leading 32 - 27. The third period saw the Red Hurricanes turn up the defensive pressure. The Canes scored first to open the period followed by a Wolverine turnover. Another New Castle basket and a Cane steal leading to a score, put the Canes ahead 33 - 32. Ellwood again responded by outscoring New Castle, this time 7 - 2, to go back on top. Thats when the Canes press began to take its toll, three Wolverine turnovers led to a 3:04 scoring drought and a 43 - 39 New Castle lead to end the third period. Ellwood City got within two with a hoop to start the fourth but the Canes kept up the pressure and moved out to an eight point lead with just 45 second left. Thats when Cook and Malone nailed their free throws to ice the game.
