While the temperature outside was reaching new lows for the season the Hurricanes shooting was also reaching new lows. After suffering through two games with no offense, Aliquippa and North Allegheny, it all looked better against Seneca Valley but such was not the case. Tonight the Hurricanes went zero for seven from the field in the first quarter, managing to make just three free throws. Fortunately Shaler missed four free throws and led after one by only eight, 11 - 3. That was enough however, as the Canes never recovered and were dealt a devastating home loss by the Shaler Titans 57 - 41.

New Castle again playing its very active 3-2 zone that makes it very difficult on opponents and creates many turnovers. Shaler just like North Allegheny did, employed a long quick passing attack against it, hoping for an open look at a ‘three’ or an open man underneath. Shaler with a bigger line up than the Canes was able to pass over the defense and were much more sure handed than North Allegheny and did not give up the turnovers. Shaler switched defenses but sometimes employed a 1-3-1 zone defense with 6’4" Demetris out front much the way the Canes did last year with David Young.

Shaler scored first at 7:10 on a basket by their star Yuri Demetris. He was fouled and made the free throw to put the Titans up 3 - 0. Neither team scored again until Shaler made it 5 - 0 at 4:46.

Finally New Castle got on the board at the 3:17 mark when Mark Cook hit one of two free throws. Shaler hit the next two baskets and led 9 - 1 with 1:01 to play in the first. Jamahl Lewis made two free throws with 39 seconds left before the Titans scored again for an 11 - 3 lead after one quarter.

After a Hurricane steal to start the second period Lewis scored again for the Canes. Another New Castle steal and a Titan foul sent Lewis to the line and the Canes were within five, 11 - 6.

Shaler then went on an 11 - 0 run led by six Demetris points to lead 22 - 6 after 5:19 of the second quarter. Mark Cook stopped the bleeding with a ‘three’ at 5:02 but Shaler answered right back with a ‘three’ of their own.

The Canes did score six points during the next 1:15 but then went dry again not scoring on four possessions and trailed 34 - 15 before Dom Joseph scored with 55 seconds to play in the half. Shaler scored again and led 36 - 17 at intermission.

New Castle did no better to start the third as four possessions resulted in no points. Lewis finally scored at 5:34. The Canes didn’t score again until Lewis did again at 4:33. Halfway through the third period Shaler led 47 - 21.

Lewis the only Hurricane to score in the quarter, made two more baskets and New Castle trailed 49 - 25 after three periods.

The Canes outscored the Titans in the fourth period 16 - 8 to draw the final score a little closer. Bad Guys 57 Good Guys 41.

Jamahl Lewis led the Canes in scoring with 18. Yuri Demetris was held to 24 points, below his 29 ppg avg.

In attendance at tonight’s game were David Young, Eddie Pagley and Pat Cain. All home from schools on Christmas break.
