Tonight at the Mt. Lebanon Christmas Tourney the Red Hurricanes were the only one of four WPIAL participants to come away with a win.

The Hurricanes topped the previously unbeaten Spartans of Boardman, Ohio 58-52 in the third game of four scheduled on the first day of the tournament. Penn Hills lost to Herndon, Va. 73-61 in the first game, Peters Township fell to Washington-Lee High School of Arlington, Va. 61-60 on a last second shot and host Mt. Lebanon lost51-48 to Brookline, Mass.

Tuesday night the Canes will face Brookline, Mass. in a semi-final match-up at 8:00 p.m.

In tonight's game Boardman led early 6 - 2 with the Canes not scoring their fourth point until Matt Conti scored at 4:50. After a steal, Mark Cook hit to tie the score at six. But a three point play by the Spartans put them back on top 9 - 6.

That's when Jamahl Lewis who has a tendency to score in bunches did just that. Lewis ripped off 10 straight points, the last on a long 'three' to give the Canes a 16 - 9 lead with 1:55 to play in the first period. Boardman hit two baskets to close the quarter but the Hurricanes still led by three after one period.

The second quarter was played pretty evenly with each team scoring 12 points in the period. The Canes scoring was all done by Lewis and Tom Whitten. Witten hit three soft shots inside while Lewis canned another 'three' among his points. New Castle still led by only three at the half 28 - 25.

New Castle's scoring woes continued tonight but as in the past games defense saved them. Early in the third after a quick score and the Spartans trailing by only one, the Canes missed and Boardman got the rebound. Quickly New Castle forced a turnover but again missed their next shot. The Canes again stole the ball back before Boardman could get off a shot with a chance to take the lead. This trip down Dom Joseph scored and after another Hurricane steal a technical foul was assessed against the Spartans. Mark Cook drained both free throws and the Cane's lead jumped from one to five at the 5:11 mark.

Boardman's height advantage started to show in the middle of the period as they had several second chances on shots and were fouled in the process. Four made free throws by the Spartans sandwiched around a New Castle turnover, again dropped the Canes lead to just one.

New Castle then reeled off 10 unanswered points, highlighted by a 'three' by Conti to take an 11-point lead at 2:03 of the third. The Canes went scoreless the rest of the period while Boardman hit four more free throws to close within seven after three, 44 - 37. Eight of the Spartan's 12 points in the quarter came at the free throw line.

Cook hit two baskets to start the fourth period to put the Canes back up by 11 at 7:28. Boardman then went back to the free throw line for six more shots over the next minute making five and drawing back to within six of the Hurricanes.

Conti then hit a 'two' at 5:30 and Cook one of two free throws at 3:18 to get the lead back to nine. The Spartans made a basket at 2:42 but the Canes got one back when Joseph hit one of two free throws at 2:30.

The Spartans were fouled on an attempted 'three' and made all three free throws then a steal and a hoop got Boardman within three, 52 - 49 with 2:05 to play in the game.

The Canes had a chance to make the win a lot easier down the stretch by hitting some free throws but could manage only one of two on six trips to the line in the fourth period. It was enough however as they beat the Spartans 58 - 52.
