The Canes’ message this season is no matter how you want to play we’ll be ready. You want to run OK, want to slow it down, OK, want to play tight defense, OK too. So far this season the Red Hurricanes have been able to play whatever game the opponent wants to play and it has led to the Section 3 championship.

Tonight the Canes remained undefeated at they topped a determined North Allegheny team 57-45 to win their 23rd game on the season and claim the championship of Section 3.

From the outset the Tigers played a tight physical man-to-man defense and the Canes responded in kind. North Allegheny scored the first bucket of the game at 7:31 and Dom Joseph tied it at 7:15.

After that the Canes’ next four possessions resulted in turnovers. The Tigers, however made only one basket in the next three minutes and led only 4-2 when Hoover Gibson put back a missed shot to tie it at 4:07.

NA made one free throw at 3:43 and the Gibson hit a jumper from the free throw line to put the Canes ahead 6-5.

Gibson’s spurt finished as he swatted away a Tiger shot to keep the Canes in front.

Mark DeMonaco was then fouled taking it to the hoop but made only one of two free throws.

The Canes stole the ball right back and Leon Ward was fouled on his was to the basket.

Ward missed both free throws and North Allegheny answered with a basket at 1:11 to tie the game at seven.

Chris Cain then scored with 48 seconds left and following a Tiger miss DeMonaco was mugged again driving to the hoop. This time however he was called for a charge. The call brought an unwanted (by the referee) response from the New Castle bench that resulted in a technical foul.

The Tigers made both free throws with 1.7 second left in the quarter. After one the score was tied 9-9.

DeMonaco hit a ‘three’ to open the second period and NA responded with a ‘two’ at 6:43.

After a Canes’ turnover the Tigers hit again to take a 13-12 lead at 6:14.

At 4:37 Dante Spino was fouled going to the hoop. The basket was good and so was the free throw and the Canes led 15-13.

NA hit a ‘three’ at 4:10 to regain the lead.

DeMonaco was again fouled while shooting but again hit only one of two free throws.

North Allegheny made two free throw at 3:39 to go ahead 18-16.

The next time down the court the Tigers dropped into a zone and Joseph promptly made them pay by drilling a ‘three’ to put the Canes on top.

Two more free throws by the Tiger put them on top 20-19 at 2:42.

Joseph was then fouled and went to the line for a one-and-one. He made them both giving the Canes the lead. At the other end Joseph then stole the ball and hit Cain on a long outlet pass. Cain made the lay-up and was fouled. He made the free throw and the three point play put the Red Hurricanes ahead 24-20 with 2:08 left in the half.

After a Tiger miss Spino was fouled while shooting and made both free throws to put the Canes ahead by six.

North Allegheny scored at 1:38 but Joseph then nailed another ‘three’. DeMonaco stole the ball and hit Cain on the outlet. Cain was again fouled while shooting. He made both free throws with 48 seconds to play in the half.

The Tigers missed at the end of the half and New Castle led at intermission 31-22.

New Castle had ended the second quarter on a 12-2 run.

The second half started the way so many have this season with Ward hitting a ‘three’ and the lead was 12.

With six minutes to play in the period Joseph picked up his third foul but Coach Sarandrea did not take him out even with a 12 point lead. The move was the right one as Joseph stole the ball on the Tigers next possession and then hit a shot making the score 36-22.

NA quickly turned the ball back over to the Canes and Joseph scored again and New Castle led by 16, 38-22 at the 5:11 mark.

North Allegheny narrowed the gap through the rest of the period as the Canes missed on five straight possessions and hitting only three free throw.

After three periods the Canes lead was the same as at the half, nine points 41-32.

Joseph scored to open the fourth and the lead was 11.

The Tigers scored at 6:21, then Gibson hit a jumper at 6:05 to extend the lead back to 13.

A ‘three’ by NA at 5:05 brought the Tigers to within eight.

Gibson hit two free throws at 4:21 then Joseph scored going to the hoop at 3:45 to put the Canes up 49-37.

Four straight points by the Tigers and the lead was just eight again. After a NA turnover Cain scored at 1:36, 51-41 New Castle.

The at 1:18 DeMonaco stole the ball and drove to the hoop. Behind him Ward and a Tiger got tangled up and a double foul was called.

On the change of possession North Allegheny took the ball but the Canes stole the ball right back.

After that the game became a free throw shooting contest with DeMonaco hitting four of four and Ward two of two as the Tigers made two baskets for the final margin of 57-45.

Dom Joseph led the Canes with 18 points. Mark DeMonaco was the only other Cane in double figures with 10. Gibson had three blocked shots and six rebounds.
