the Red Hurricane Report Guestbook The North Allegheny Tigers riding an eight game winning streak looked to take control of Section 3 with a home game against the Hurricanes. Both teams entered the game 4-0 in league play while the Tigers at 9-2 overall had only lost to Mt. Lebanon and undefeated Upper St. Clair. The Hurricanes undefeated at 14-0 felt right at home on the Tigers floor, scoring 23 points in the first quarter, 11 directly from intense defensive pressure. New Castle cooled somewhat in the second period but exploded again in the third, this time for 31 points, then coasted to a 71-55 win and first place in the section. The Canes took the opening tip but quickly turned it over to the Tigers. New Castle then stole it back and Mark DeMonaco was fouled taking it to the hoop. The Canes best free throw shooter hit them both and New Castle led 2-0 at 7:11. North Allegheny responded with a bucket but Dante Spino nailed a three to move the Canes ahead 5-2. The Tigers scored again and the Canes answered again with a three this one from DeMonaco, 8-4 Canes. After a Tigers miss Dom Joseph scored putting the Canes up six. A steal by Spino and a layup and the lead was now eight, 12-4. Leon Ward with a steal and a basket made it 14-4 with 4:00 gone. Then a blocked shot by the 60 Ward on NAs 66" center set the Canes running again and Spino cashed in with another three to put the Canes up 17-4. NA finally broke a 2:30 drought with at free throw but a Chris Cain free throw and a Ward three stretched the lead to 16, 21-5. The Tigers scored five points as the quarter closed to narrow the gap but Hoover Gibson scored to make it 23-10 after one. North Allegheny turned up their defense to open second and the Hurricanes first five possessions resulted in only two points, two misses and two turnovers. The Tigers did not take advantage however as they scored only three points themselves in the first four minutes and closed only within 12, 25-13. Joseph broke the ice for the Canes then NA countered to stay within 12. Gibson hit a free throw at 2:55 but that was followed by four more Canes possessions that resulted in three missed shots. NA scored four points to end the period and at the half New Castles lead was 11, 30-19. New Castle was only three of 12 from the field in the second period. Things didnt look good to start the third as the Canes missed a three to open the quarter and the Tigers got within nine at 30-21. The teams exchanged baskets and after another Hurricanes miss the Tigers with a chance to close to within seven were called for an offensive foul giving the ball back to the Canes. Joseph on a move to the hoop was fouled and made two free throws. Then the Canes quickly stole the ball and Spino was fouled on a drive and he made two, putting the lead back at 13. A three point play by the Tigers made the score 36-26 at 5:32. Joseph then hit his first three of the night which was followed by a big shot block by Gibson at the other end. DeMonaco then nailed a three making it 42-26. NA hit a three but a Spino free throw and a layup after a Joseph blocked shot put the Canes ahead 45-29. DeMonaco made one of the technicals free throws but the North Allegheny coach quickly received another technical as Joseph was fouled while shooting. Joseph made one free throw, DeMonaco drained the two technical free throws then Joseph scored after the inbounds. Following a New Castle steal Spino made it 56-29 at 1:17. The Canes had just out scored North Allegheny 24-6 over 4:30 of the third period.
