Tip Off Classic Next Game - Tuesday Dec. 4 @ Ellwood City Sign
the Red Hurricane Report Guestbook Facing the George Junior Republic Tigers in the finals of Tipoff Classic for the third straight year the Hurricanes hoped history did not repeat. The Canes dominated by sophomores in 1999 lost 74-69. In 2000 the junior laden Hurricanes lost by 25, 61-46. Tonight starting four seniors, New Castle who didnt score a basket until Mark DeMonaco hit a three at 3:39 of the first period, took an 8-6 lead on a basket by Dom Joseph and then exploded on offense and defense to bury the Tigers before they knew what hit them. DeMonacos and Josephs baskets fueled a 19-1 run by the Canes and New Castle never looked back winning 85-49. George Junior opened in a triangle and two with the chasers following Joseph and Dante Spino. The defense did its job as the Canes had only three free throws to show for over four minutes of work and were trailing the tall talented Tigers 7-3. A time out by Coach John Sarandrea adjusted the Hurricanes offensive attack and the rest was history. DeMonacos three and Josephs slash to the hoop put the Canes ahead. Geo. Jr. missed two free throw then Joseph again drove to the hoop to score. Then the Canes defensive pressure took over. Five straight Tiger possessions resulted in turnovers and 10 Hurricanes points. Joseph hit again with just four seconds in the period and New Castle led 22-8 after one. A big turning point of the first period was a powerful shot block by 67" Vojtech Hybler on the Tigers 66" Shawn Simpson. George Jr. opened the game appearing to be going to use their height and inside play to beat the Canes. The block of Simpson was an apparent deterrent as Simpson next shot was pull-up jumper over Hybler instead of trying to go to the hoop and his next shot was a brick from behind the arc and working the ball inside done. Hoover Gibson scored the first points of the second period on a drive to the hoop but George Jr. capitalized on some Canes turnovers and went on a 10-3 run to get back within nine 27-18. Joseph stopped the bleeding by hitting two free throws at 4:06 to get the lead back to 11. Gibson hit again and the Canes led 31-19 at 3:29. The defense was fast and furious for both teams for the next two minutes and no points were scored until Spino hit a three at 1:29. A steal by New Castle and Deadeye DeMonaco was back at the free throw line hitting both to extend the lead to 35-19. (DeMarco is 12 for 13 free throw attempts in two games). Joseph then scored with 37 seconds to play in the half. George Jr. hit two free throw before Spino was fouled on a drive and he made a three point play the old fashion way. New Castle had extended their first quarter lead by eight and lead 41-21 at the half. George Jr. scored the first three point of the second half then the Canes went on a 10-4 run to lead 51-29. Thats when Chris Cain went to work scoring 11 of his 18 points as the quarter ended. New Castle led after three periods. 64-34 The Canes kept pouring it on in the fourth, out scoring George Jr. 21-15 for the period. The Canes cleared the bench and added threes from Devin Taylor and Hybler to lead by as much as 40 points, 85-45 with 1:01 to play, before the Tigers scored the last four points. Mark DeMonaco led the Canes with 21 points while Dom Joseph and Chris Cain each added 18. Dante Spino finished with 11. Vojtech Hybler added three blocks.
