Canes tame Wolverines Next Game - Tuesday Dec. 4 @ Ellwood City Sign
the Red Hurricane Report Guestbook Former Red Hurricanes coach and assistant athletic director Bob Kerr is in his first year as the coach of the Ellwood City Wolverines. Coach Kerr has installed a New Castle style of play and the Wolverines have responded by winning the Grove City Tipoff Tourney. Tonight the young Wolverines (only one returning starter) go an up close look at the style of play they are emulating. The Hurricanes blew into Lincoln High School and breezed out with an easy victory over the Wolverines 99-60. New Castle scored first on a Chris Cain basket then reeled of a 27-7 run, including 14 straight, before Ellwood scored four points at the end of the quarter. After one the score was 29-11. Ellwood pressed the Canes to open the second period and created two straight turnovers and the Wolverines scored four straight. Ralph Currie put the Canes on the board with a hoop at 6:33. Fourteen was as close as the Wolverines would get in the second period as the Canes had a 14-4 run to end the period ahead by 25, 52-27. To begin the second half Ellwood again came out with a flurry. After a Dom Joseph three the Wolverines out scored New Castle 9-4 to get back within 13. A free throw by Hoover Gibson and a three by Dante Spino opened the gap back up. The Canes kept on rolling in the third, led by Spinos seven points and led 76-40 after three quarters. In the fourth Ellwood again game out playing hard. This time they out scored New Castle 11-4 during the first two minutes of the period. Mark Ortiz and Joseph had the Canes points during the stretch. Ortiz then scored the next four Canes points followed by a long three from Devin Taylor to put the Red Hurricanes up by 34. During the fourth period Jim Rossi hit his first bucket of the season and as a result every Cane scored during the game tonight. New Castle outscored the Wolverines 23-20 in the period. The Canes have now out scored their opponents in 11 of 12 quarters this season. Four Hurricanes hit double figures led by Chris Cains 21. Dom Joseph added 19, Dante Spino 17, and Mark DeMonaco 12. DeMonaco hit 7 of 7 free throw and is now 19 of 20 on the season. .
