The 4-12 Pine-Richland Rams visited the New Castle Fieldhouse and played their game of the season tonight and nearly upset the undefeated Red Hurricanes.

New Castle trailed 12-7 after one period, 25-18 at the half and 29-23 with 5:30 left to play in the third quarter until Hoover Gibson’s excitement and intensity took over the game. In a 40 second time period Gibson crashed the boards, made a layup was fouled, made the free throw then sprinted to the other end and skied and blocked a shot. The effort inspired the Canes and ignited the home crowd spurring a Hurricanes to a 10-0 run and a 33-29 lead.

Pine-Richland stayed close the rest of the way but the Canes prevailed 51-46.

The Rams scored first but Leon Ward quickly responded to tie the game at two. After a Pine-Richland turnover Dante Spino hit a ‘three’ at 6:04 and everyone expected a run to blow the game open early.

The run came but it was the Rams who did the running as they outscored the Canes 10-0 over the next five minutes. New Castle did not take care of the ball turning it over five times as Pine-Richland played a tight man-for-man.

The Canes finally scored again at 1:04 to trail after one 12-7.

New Castle who averages nearly 14 shots per quarter shot only seven times and made only three of those.

After three more misses to open the second quarter Gibson broke the ice with two free throws and the Canes trailed 12-9 at 6:38.

The Rams responded at 5:40, then following another Canes’ miss, hit another ‘two’ to lead 16-12.

The Hurricanes misfired again and Pine-Richland hit a ‘three’ to go ahead by seven, 19-12.

Dom Joseph made a free throw with 4:00 to play in the half then Mark DeMonaco hit a ‘three’ to get the Canes within three.

Three more Hurricanes’ turnovers led to a 6-0 Ram spurt and increased the lead to 25-16 with just 53 seconds left till intermission.

DeMonaco made both ends of a one-and-one and New Castle trailed at the half 25-18.

New Castle made only two of 10 field goal attempts in the second quarter.

Ward hit a ‘three’ to open the second half then after a Ram turnover Ward hit Joseph underneath and the Canes were back within two 25-23 at 7:17.

Pine-Richland made back to back buckets to move back to a six point lead at 6:08 when Gibson took over.

Following a Hurricanes’ steal Gibson made the bucket and was fouled. He made the free throw then came up with the big block that turned the Canes loose.

Joseph hit a basket then the Hurricanes’ defense swarmed over the Rams creating three straight turnovers. DeMonaco scored and was fouled, drained the free throw then Spino hit at 4:04 to give New Castle a four point lead, 33-29.

The Rams scored to get back within two but Joseph answered at 2:12.

Ward hit two free throws with 58 seconds in the quarter to put the Hurricanes up by six.

Pine-Richland made three free throws as the period closed to reduce the Canes’ lead to three, 37-34.

The Rams turned it over three times to start the final period but the Red Hurricanes missed two ‘threes’ and the score was still 37-34 until Gibson scored at 5:57.

Joe Carter then knocked the ball loose from Pine-Richland and he and a Ram got tangled up on the floor at mid court. In the jumble Carter was called for a technical foul and was ejected from the game for kicking at the other player while both were tangled up on the floor.

The Rams made both of the technical free throws and a basket on the ensuing possession to close within one 39-38.

After a Hurricanes’ miss a still fired up Gibson grabbed the loose ball and scored on the put-back.

Pine-Richland missed then Gibson was fouled and made both ends of the one-and-one giving the Canes a five point lead 43-38.

The Rams then scored with 4:00 to play to get within three.

Neither team could score in the next two minutes as both teams missed the front ends of one-and-ones.

At 1:55 Joseph hit the front of a one-and-one but missed the second and Gibson grabbed the rebound. Gibson got the ball back and scored making it 46-40.

Pine-Richland hit a free throw at 1:11 to get back within five.

The Canes then put the ball in the hands of DeMonaco an 88 percent free throw shooter.

The Rams fouled him and with the Canes in the double bonus DeMonaco made both.

Pine-Richland scored again then quickly fouled DeMonaco again. He made again both keeping the lead at five 48-43.

The Rams then hit a ‘three’ with 21 seconds left and fouled DeMonaco again with just 11 seconds to play. This time he hit only one of two but time ran out on the Rams.

The Canes remain undefeated beating Pine-Richland 51-46.

Hoover Gibson with 11 in the second half and Mark DeMonaco with eight each scored 13 to lead the Canes. Gibson had eight rebound, seven in the second half.
