Some great plays by the home team, a couple blown calls by the refs, the pep band playing, a great effort by the opponent, a large loud excited crowd at the field house affecting the outcome, it was just like old times at the New Castle Field House. Tonight the Red Hurricanes battled through poor shooting early, turnovers, and poor free throw shooting late to beat the highly touted Penn Hills Indians and their 6'7" Boston College recruit Akida McClain, 73-67 in overtime.

New Castle made their first three shots of the game a ‘three’ by Devin Taylor and two buckets by 6’6" Junior Demetrius Searcy, who started again tonight, but the Canes hit only one of their next nine attempts in the first quarter and saw the Indians jump out to a 19-9 lead after one period.

The Canes didn’t shoot much better in the second period hitting only six of fifteen but three of those were ‘threes,’ one each by Taylor, Searcy and Keenan Moore. Combine that with New Castle playing better defense holding Penn Hills to just nine points in the quarter and the Canes were able to close within two, 28-26 at halftime.

Penn Hills hit a ‘three’ and a ‘two’ to start the second half but Taylor answered with a ‘three’ at 6:27 to keep the Indians within sight, 33-29.

The teams exchanged buckets for the next four minutes and the Canes still trailed by three, 41-38 after Taylor scored with 1:37 left in the third quarter.

That’s when in the course of the Canes trapping defense Moore pressured one of the Indians’ guards a little to closely and was called for a foul. The Penn Hills player took exception to being fouled and retaliated and was called for a technical foul.

Moore drained both free throws and New Castle was within one, 41-40.

The Hurricanes also got possession but turned the ball over to Penn Hills and they scored at the 56 second mark.

David Richards then hit a ‘three’ with 31 seconds to go in the third to put the Canes in a tie for the first time.

Penn Hills was unable to get a shot off as the quarter ended and the score was tied at 31 after three quarters.

Following a Hurricanes’ turnover the Indians scored first in the fourth to go back on top, 45-43.

Moore responded with a magnificent drive down the lane for two and was fouled. He missed the free throw but the score was tied at 45 at the 6:52 mark.

Penn Hills scored again at 6:38 and after a Canes’ miss McClain hit two free throws to put the Indians up by four, 49-45.

New Castle turned it over in their next possession but Penn Hills missed a ‘three.’

Donovon Jones was then fouled and went to the line for the Canes. He hit both free throws to narrow the gap to two, 49-47 at the 5:59 mark.

Another Hurricanes’ turnover led to another Indians’ score at 5:35.

Richards missed the front of a one-and-one at 5:26 and McClain scored again to put Penn Hills up by six, 53-47.

The Canes turned it over again but the Indians missed the front of a one-and-one.

New Castle missed on their next attempt but stole the ball right back and Brian Bober was fouled. He missed the front of his one-and-one but Taylor grabbed the rebound and he put it up and in to get the Canes back within four, 53-49 at 3:40.

Penn Hills scored again at 3:27 to go back up by six.

The Canes missed on their next shot but Bober grabbed the rebound put it back up and in and was fouled.

This time he hit the free throw and New Castle trailed by three, 55-52 with 2:51 to play in the game.

The Indians went back to the line again missed the front of a one-and-one and this time Taylor was fouled and went to the line to shoot two.

He hit the first but missed the second as the ball rattled around deep in the basket and popped back out. The Canes trailed by only two with 2:26 left.

New Castle stole the ball from the Indians on their next possession and Jones was fouled for the Canes going to the hoop.

Jones however missed both free throw attempts and Penn Hills had the ball with the lead and just 2:00 to play.

With the Canes still trapping Moore tipped away an Indians’ pass, grabbed the ball and hit a streaking Jones, who laid it in and tied the game at 55 at the 1:56 mark.

Penn Hills then scored again at 1:34 to go back up by two, 57-55.

Moore answered with a ‘two’ and the game was again tied at 1:05.

At 2:53 Penn Hills hit one of two free throws to tie the game at 62.

The Indians then stole the Canes inbounds pass again and this time converted taking the lead 64-62.

Richards then missed two free throws but grabbed his own rebound. After another Canes’ missed Chris Cain grabbed the rebound and scored tying the game at 64 with 1:45 left in overtime.

Penn Hills missed their next attempt and the Hurricanes got the ball.

Taylor was fouled and went to the free throw line to shoot two with 1:18 to go. He made both free throws putting New Castle ahead.

New Castle then stole the ball and Moore scored giving the Canes a four point 68-64 lead at 1:07.

Penn Hills wasn’t done though as they hit a ‘three’ just 16 seconds later closing to within one, 68-67.

On New Castle’s next possession Cain’s entry pass was grabbed by the Indians. Cain then stripped the ball and Richards picked up the loose ball and was fouled. He made the first of two giving New Castle a two point lead, 69-67 with 21 seconds to play. Richards missed the second but Taylor grabbed another offensive rebound.

Richards was then fouled again by the Indians, going to the line with 14 seconds left and a one point lead.

This time he made both free throws upping the lead to four.

New Castle stole the ball from the Indians and Richards scored as time ran out for the final score of 73-67.
