Titans topple Hurricanes Sign
the Red Hurricanes Report Guestbook
The Hurricanes shooting woes continued tonight against the Shaler Titans on the road at Shaler High School. The Canes shot only 35% (22 of 63) from the field while taking 33 three point shots and hitting ten. But while the offense was weak the defense was porous as Shaler used excellent ball movement against the Canes 2-3 zone and half court trap leading to numerous layups and open looks at threes. Shaler opened playing man-to-man and the Hurricanes opened in a diamond-and-one with Keenan Moore chasing Shalers Junior Nick Sefscik. The Canes took the lead on a three point play by Chris Cain but Sefsick hit a three just eight seconds later to tie it at the 7:08 mark. New Castle then on two free throws by Devin Taylor and a three by David Richards moved ahead 7-3 at 6:31. The Red Hurricanes kept increasing the lead through out the quarter as Richards hit another three and Cain added one, while the Titans were limited to only one more field goal, another three by Sefscik. After one period New Castle led 22-14. The Titans hit a three to open the second quarter and began to apply full court pressure to the Canes. As a result Shaler stole the ball twice and hit a three and a two." Tying the game at 22 at the 6:16 mark. The Hurricanes tried to recover as Taylor made a three at 6:06 and following a Titans hoop, Cain scored to make it 27-24 New Castle at 5:32. Keenan Moore blocked the next Titan shot and the Hurricanes moved ahead 29-24 on a Taylor put-back of a missed shot. New Castle had come out of their diamond and one to begin the second quarter and were back in their 2-3 zone. While the Titans were playing a 2-3 zone almost exclusively. The Titans answered the Canes with a three at 4:40 and after a steal scored at 4:08 and were fouled. The two tied the game at 29 and the free throw put Shaler ahead for the first time in the game. Shaler hit only two free throws and a two the rest of the quarter but the Canes went scoreless for 4:35 and managed only a bucket by Taylor with 21 seconds left in the half. After only scoring nine points in the period (4 for 10 from the field), New Castle trailed 34-31. Looking for some scoring from the outside the Canes inserted Senior David Colella into the lineup. On the first trip down the court Colella launched a three from the corner and was fouled. He went to the line to shoot three and hit two, getting New Castle back to within one, 34-33. (The experiment didn't work however as Colella went one of nine on three point attempts.) Shaler scored at 7:08 to up the lead to three and after a steal scored again to go up by five 38-33 at 6:25. Taylor answered with a three at 6:04 but Sefscik hit a three at 5:36 to keep the lead at five. The Canes were whistled for charging which gave the ball back to the Titans. Shaler then scored a two at 4:54 and after a Canes missed three, hit another two at 4:05 to up their lead to nine, 45-36. Following a steal by the Hurricanes, Richard hit a three making it 45-39 Shaler at 2:32, but again the Titans scored upping the lead to 47-39. After a Canes missed three Shaler made a three point play and with 1:09 left in the third quarter led by 11, 50-39. With just 48 seconds left Shaler was called for a flagrant foul on Richards who was driving to the hoop. The shot went in and Richards went to the free throw line to shoot two shots but he missed them both. The Canes retained possession and on the next field goal attempt Taylor was fouled. He made only the first of two but narrowed the gap to eight, 50-42. Shaler however answered again with a three to lead 53-42 after three quarters. The Canes missed their first two threes of the four quarter (4 of 14 in the fourth) while Shaler missed a two and the front of a one-and-one. Finally Moore hit a three at 6:04 to make it an eight point game 53-45. Shaler was then fouled at 5:47 and the Canes received a technical foul for slamming the ball down. The Titans made the front of the one-and-one and both of the technicals and with possession hit a two and suddenly the lead was 13, 58-45. Taylor scored at 4:58 making it 58-47 but Shaler hit one free throw to put the lead at 12. On the Hurricanes next possession Donovon Jones grabbed a rebound and put it back for two. Getting the Canes back to within 10. Following a Titans turnover another Canes miss was grabbed by Jones and he again converted narrowing the gap to eight points, 59-51 with 3:08 to play. But Shaler came right back with a three to go back up by 11, 62-51. Colella hit a three at 2:23 to make it 62-54. The New Castle press created a turnover and the Canes called time. Out of the timeout the Canes ran a play for Taylor to be open for a three and he nailed it at 1:35 to move New Castle within five points, 62-57. Shaler missed on their next field goal attempt but they crashed the board and finally put it through on the third try and with 1:00 to play were back ahead 64-57. After a Hurricanes miss Shaler made one of two free throws to go ahead 65-57 with just 40 seconds left. Jones scored with 22 seconds to go getting the lead down two six, 65-59. The Canes fouled quickly but the Titans made both free throws. Taylor hit at three at the seven second mark to end the scoring. Devin Taylor led the Canes with 24 points and 13 rebounds (7 offensive) and David Richards tossed in 13 points. The JVs won their game 58-39.
