Perry sinks Hurricanes Sign
the Red Hurricanes Report Guestbook
Flashes of great defense and agonizingly long periods of disappointing offense by the Canes, were the stories of New Castles season opener against Pittsburgh Perry. The Canes stole the ball from Perry on the Commodores first two possessions and converted both to grab a 4-0 lead at 5:55. Perry responded with a resounding dunk on their next possession, then they stole the ball twice scoring back to back hoops and grabbing a 6-4 lead at 4:17. After several misses by the Canes, another New Castle turnover led to a three by Perry and a 9-4 lead at 2:02. Devin Taylor finally stopped the run with a basket at 1:46. Perry made a free throw at 1:35 then another Hurricanes' turnover put Perry ahead 12-6. Chris Cain scored at the 22-second mark but Perry answered and led after one period 14-8. Taylor hit a three to open the second period but Perry answered again at 7:05. Following a Canes turnover and a missed shot, Perry hit a free throw and a bucket and moved out to a 10 point lead 21-11 at 5:50 of the second. Two free throws by Keenan Moore narrowed the gap but Perry quickly scored again. Moore then hit two more free throws making the score 23-15 at 4:51. The Canes had at times employed their full-court trap with limited success but now went into their half-court trap. Perry had no answer for the defensive change and the Commodores turned the ball over five times and the Red Hurricanes ran off nine straight points to take a 24-23 lead with 1:20 left in the half. Perry scored with 42 seconds left to go back on top 25-24 but David Richards hit one of two free throws to tie the game at 25. Perry and New Castle each hit a free throw to close the half and the score was tied at 26 at intermission. The Hurricanes first five possessions of the second half resulted in three turnovers and two misses while Perry reeled off 11 straight points to go on top 37-26 at the 5:37 mark. Taylor stopped the bleeding with a two at 5:15. The Canes offense picked up during the rest of the period as Moore hit two threes, Richards and Taylor each hit a three and Brian Bober scored on an inside move as New Castle out scored Perry 17-10 and the Red Hurricanes were back within four, 47-43 after three quarters. The Canes again opened a quarter poorly by turning the ball over twice and missing a shot, on their first three possessions. Perry again made them pay, hitting a two and a three to go back up by nine, 52-43 at 6:41. Taylor made two free throws but four more Canes turnovers allowed Perry to push their lead to 15, 58-45 at the 4:32 mark New Castle again attempted a comeback with Moore and Richards each hitting a three and Cain making a hoop to narrow the gap to five at 58-53 with 3:20 left to play. But that was the last of the scoring for the Canes as three more turnovers led to easy buckets by the Commodores and the a final score of 66-53. Devin Taylor led the Hurricanes with 19 points and 10 rebounds while David Richards (three-3s) and Keenan Moore (three-3s) each added 13 points.
