Hurricanes sunk again - Vikings do in Canes Sign
the Red Hurricanes Report Guestbook
Joe Paterno says youre not as good as you look when you win and youre not as bad as you look when you lose. Hopefully that saying holds true for basketball also. As the Red Hurricanes suffered a terrible looking loss tonight in the first round of the Midland Tip-Off Tournament at the hands of Pittsburgh Central Catholic 60-45. The Canes now 2-2 on the season had 20 turnovers in their loss to Pittsburgh Perry in the season opener, while tonight they committed 15. A good number of the turnovers in the Perry game were forced due to the quickness of the Commodores, tonight all but a couple were unforced errors. In addition to the turnovers the Hurricanes were only one of 12 on three point shots while shooting just 36 percent for the game. Heres hoping Joes right. The Canes started the game by stealing the ball from the Vikings but an alley-oop from Chris Cain to Devin Taylor went awry as Taylor slammed the ball into the rim. New Castle, as Hurricanes teams historically do redeemed themselves and stole the ball again. This time Brian Bober scored to put the Canes ahead at the 6:20 mark. Central Catholic scored at 6:02 to tie the game at two. Taylor then scored the first of his game high 26 at 5:40. Central tied it at four at 5:27. Cain made two free throws at 5:10 to put New Castle back on top. The Vikings scored at 4:53 to knot it at six. The Hurricanes first turnover led to an easy Central basket and they led 8-6 at 4:39. After another Canes turnover Central Catholic hit one of two free throws to lead 9-6 at 3:34. Cain scored at 2:52 but Central answered to remain on top 11-8. Keenan Moore hit a two at 1:37 but the Vikings again answered at 1:25. At the 1:11 mark Taylor grabbed the carom off of blocked shot and put it back to get the Canes to within one, 13-12. After a Central miss Taylor was fouled while shooting. He hit both free throws and the Red Hurricanes had the lead14-13 with 34 seconds left in the quarter. However the Vikings scored at the 25-second mark to hold a 15-14 advantage after one period. Both teams were sloppy to start the second quarter, as they each turned it over twice and missed their first four shots. Moore finally broke the ice at 5:57 to tie the game at 15. Taylor scored at 5:48 to give the Canes the lead, 17-15. Central Catholic scored at 5:30 to tie it and again at 4:19 after each team had missed several shots. Taylor tied it at 19 at 3:34 but Central scored 10 seconds later to go back on top by two. Two free throws and a hoop by Taylor matched the Vikings, keeping the game tied at 23 with two minutes to play in the half. The Vikings scored a two at the one minute mark and following a Hurricanes miss by hitting a three to take a five-point lead, 28-23 with 26 seconds left. Taylor hit one of two free throws 15 seconds left to narrow the gap to four at half time, 28-24. Bober grabbed a missed shot and scored on the put-back to open the third quarter for the Canes. Central Catholic scored just 15 seconds later but Taylor hit the Canes only three of the game and Bober scored on another put-back and New Castle had the lead 31-30 at the 6:29 mark of the third quarter. The Vikings scored again at 6:15 to go up by one, and suddenly the Canes came apart. New Castle missed their next four shots and turned the ball over three times fueling an 11-0 run by Central Catholic. Before Taylor scored on a put-back of a missed three the Canes trailed by ten 41-31 with three minutes left in the quarter. Taylors basket and a put-back by Cain at 1:02 got the Hurricanes back to within six but Central out scored New Castle 6-1 to end the quarter and the Vikings lead was 12, 47-36 after three quarters. As they did in three of the four quarters, New Castle stole the ball from the Vikings to start the period but as was the case each of the other times the Canes failed to convert and quarters first points were scored by Central Catholic. The Vikings hit one free throw at 6:36 to lead by 12, 48-36. Cain scored at 6:07 but Central answered with a three and followed a Hurricanes miss with a two to go up by 15 with 5:02 to play in the game. The Canes misfired on three threes and turned the ball over a couple times but Central didnt score again until 3:28 but that three increased the Vikings lead to 18, 56-38. Taylor scored two straight baskets to narrow the gap to 14 points. After two missed free throws by Central, sophomore William Martin in at point guard, drove to the hoop for the Canes making the score 56-44. Free throws by both teams closed out the scoring and the Hurricanes fell to the Vikings 60-45. Devin Taylor led the Red Hurricanes with 26 points and eight rebounds. Brian Bober also added eight rebounds.
