Seneca Valley High School was the site of the Hurricanes first Section 3 game and defeat of last season and tonight the Canes returned to again open Section 3 play visiting the Raiders.

Last year the Canes lost in overtime, in a game they shot miserably from the field as the Raiders sat back in a zone. Tonight apparently wanting to establish that a zone won’t work against this year’s team, the Hurricanes came out firing ‘threes.’ Keenan Moore and David Richards both missed on their first two attempts but they both found the range after that and following a ‘two’ and two ‘threes’ by Moore and a ‘three’ by Richards, New Castle led 11-0 after 4:36 gone in the first quarter.

After Seneca Valley scored at 2:23 the shut out was gone but Donovon Jones answered with a hoop at 2:07 to up the lead to 13-2.

Willie Martin hit one of two free throws at 1:04 following another Raider score and the Canes lead was 14-4.

Seneca scored the last four points of the period however, and narrowed the gap to 14-8 after one quarter.

The Canes were somewhat ragged during the second quarter missing shots and giving up five turnovers at the least opportune times.

After a Raider score to open the quarter Chris Cain hit one of two free throws to put the lead back to five, 15-10.

Jones on a put-back upped the lead to 17-10 at 6:21.

Three straight Canes’ turnovers fortunately led to only one Raider score and Moore then made it 19-12 at 4:46.

After a steal, Cain increased the Hurricanes’ lead to nine, 21-12 at 4:11.

Following a Seneca Valley basket at 4:02, New Castle missed on their next shot and turned the ball over after grabbing the rebound.

During a quick timeout Coach Sarandrea not pleased about something had a talk with Chris Cain and Devin Taylor, at which time Taylor was removed from the game.

As play resumed the Hurricanes stole the ball and Willie Martin drove the floor for a lay-up and the Canes’ lead was 23-14.

A Cain ‘three’ at 1:23 put the lead at 12, 26-14.

Seneca Valley then out scored the Canes five to two to end the half to get the score back to 28-19 at intermission.

New Castle turned up the defense and turned on the offense in the third quarter as they outscored the Raiders 22-8 behind two more ‘threes’ by Moore and another by Richards.

Seneca Valley had closed to eight 31-23 at 6:03 but the Canes out scored them 20-4 over the rest of the period and led 50-27 after three.

New Castle increased their lead to 29 at the 3:45 mark but could not get to 30 to see the "Mercy Rule" come it effect. As a result the rest of the game was a foul fest as tempers flared a little and Seneca Valley shot 14 foul shots and the Canes eight.

A three pointer as time expired by the Raiders made it look even closer than it was as the Canes pounded the Raiders 71-58.

Keenan Moore was the leading scorer with 22 points while Donovon Jones who played an excellent game on the inside added 16. Chris Cain had 10 points and nine rebounds and Brian Bober added 10 rebounds and two blocked shots.

Devin Taylor who did not play after 2:46 of the second period had no points but had four block shots. One he jumped way over the rim to block what looked like a clear break away that received cheers even from the Raiders fans.
