Canes blow up Bridgers Sign
the Red Hurricanes Report Guestbook
Two losses so far this season and a resounding victory after each. New Castle blasted Francis Lewis after losing their opener to Perry and tonight dismantled Ambridge 81-49 on the heels of last nights loss to Pittsburgh Central Catholic, to capture the consolation game of the Midland Tip-Off Tournament. Defense has been a trademark of Sarandrea coached teams and tonights game was a prime example as the Canes stole the ball 15 times and scored 12 times as direct results of the thefts. Devin Taylor again led the Canes scoring 19 points and pulling down 13 rebounds, five on the offensive board. Tonight also saw Sophomore Bill Martin get considerable playing time where he spelled either David Richards or Keenan Moore. Ambridge scored first but the Canes answered with two quick baskets to go up 4-2 at 7:06. The Bridgers then went on a 9-2 spurt to lead 11-6 at the 4:10 mark. Richards from the off guard hit a three at 3:50 and following a Canes steal, he was fouled on a three point attempt. Richards hit two of the three free throws tying the game at 11. Taylor and Brian Bober each scored to up the lead to 15-11 before Ambridge broke their three minute dry spell with a hoop at the 1:00 mark. Taylor and Richards each scored again, wrapped around a Bridger free throw, and the Hurricanes ended one quarter leading 19-14. Richards hit a three to start things rolling for the Canes in the second quarter. After an Ambridge turnover New Castle went on a 6-0 spurt which started with a dunk by Taylor on an alley-oop and led 28-14 with just a minute gone in the period. Chris Cain and Moore each also scored baskets during the run. As quickly as they had come together the Red Hurricanes fell apart. Turning the ball over on three straight possessions and Ambridge scored nine unanswered points closing to within five points of the Canes 28-23 at the 4:21 mark. Bober scored at 3:58 but two free throws by the Bridgers kept the margin at five. Bober grabbed a missed shot and put it back at 3:08 putting the Canes up by seven and starting a 14-4 run by New Castle. The run was highlighted by a drive to the hoop and resounding dunk by Taylor. After two quarters the Hurricanes lead was now 14 points, 44-30. Ambridge scored first to start the third period but the Canes just picked up where they left off at halftime. Bober made two straight baskets, one on a put-back and Cain scored to put New Castle up 50-32 at the 5:36 mark. The Bridgers hit a two at 5:31 but the Hurricanes were off and running again scoring six more to extend their lead to 22, 56-34. After an Ambridge bucket at 3:03, Taylor (a three), Moore (a three), and Donovon Jones each scored pushing the lead to 26, 64-38 with 1:23 left in the third. Ambridge made one more basket in the quarter but Cain answered that and after three quarters New Castle led 66-40. Taylor, Jones and Moore each scored early in the fourth period extending the lead to 32 points, 72-40 before Ambridge hit a three at 4:31. The Hurricanes pulled the starters with more than four minutes to play and the Canes reserves finished on a 9-6 run with four points by Chris Harvey and three points and three rebounds by Demetrious Searcy and two points by David Colella. Devin Taylor, who was named to the All Tournament Team finished his two days work with 45 points and 21 rebounds. David Richards added 14 points tonight while Chris Cain and Brian Bober each scored 12.
