Blasts Hurricanes Next Game Sign
the Red Hurricane Report Guestbook The Red Hurricanes traveled to Butler knowing a win would insure a home first round playoff game next week. However Butler the long time New Castle rival was not about to go down easily. The Canes fell behind by 14 points before getting on the board for the second week in a row. But tonight unlike last week the Canes could not mount a comeback. Butler led 17-7 at halftime and then outscored the New Castle 21-0 in the second half to hand the Canes a 38-7 setback. New Castle received the opening kickoff but went just three plays and out. Butler starting with good field position at their own 45 could not move either and punted back to the Canes. A good kick by the Golden Tornadoes put the Hurricanes in a hole at the four yard line. Two runs netted the Canes only three yards setting up a third down and seven. Corey Lemmon dropped back to pass but Butler picked it off at the New Castle 30 and returned it to the nine. Three plays later Butler scored and took a 7-0 lead with just 4:23 gone in the first period. The Hurricanes started their next possession at their own 28. Again the Canes could not move the ball and were forced to punt. This time however, Butler roughed Lemmon who was back to punt (pressed into duty due to injuries to punter Dustin Elliot and back up Allan Byllk) giving New Castle a first down at the Butler 49 yard line. On the next play from scrimmage Lemmons pitch went to no one and the ball was recovered by Butler at the Cane 47. The Tornadoes were faced with a third and two at the Cane 40 but an offside penalty gave Butler a first down. Two passes and two runs later and Butler was again in the end zone. With 4:11 left in the first quarter Butler led 14-0. New Castle started again deep in opposition territory at the 27. John Rosati finally got going and on the first play burst through the line for 19 yards to the 46. This time the Canes sustained the drive and 10 plays later Rosati scored on a fourth and one from nine yards out. After Pasquale Romanos PAT the Hurricanes trailed 14-7. Butler received the ensuing kick beginning the possession at their 24. The Golden Tornadoes then began a long uncharacteristic drive that lasted 15 plays and 8:04 that resulted in a 32 yard field goal and a 17-7 lead with just 1:36 to play in the half. A short kickoff return by the Canes got the ball out to the 31 but after just four plays the New Castle turned it over for the third time when Butler recovered a fumble. New Castle held Butler on fourth down but a Hurricane desperation pass as the half ended was intercepted by the Tornadoes for turnover number four. Butler led at intermission 17-7. Things did not get any better for the Hurricanes in the second half. The Canes stopped Butler on their first possession of the half but after that the Golden Tornadoes scored touchdowns on their next three possessions. Once after another Cane turnover, once after a failed fake punt try on fourth down try and once after a punt. The Cane reserves played most of the fourth period. The good news however is that North Hills defeated North Allegheny there by giving the Canes a home game next Friday night.
