Tigers topple Canes Sign
the Red Hurricane Report Guestbook
The Hurricanes entered Tuesday nights game against the North Allegheny as the highest scoring AAAA team in the WPIAL averaging 74 points per game. That average took a big hit tonight as the Canes managed only 13 field goals in a 59-42 Section 3 loss at North Allegheny. New Castle was cold from the start hitting only two of 13 field goal attempts in the first period and then most of the time getting just one attempt, as North Allegheny completely out-muscled the Canes on the boards. The Tigers looked right at home at they hit three threes in the opening quarter and finished the game eight of 16 from behind the arc. New Castle led 4-2 at 5:09 on two jumpers in the lane from Demetrius Searcy and a basket and a free throw by NA. But New Castle missed their next five shots including one of two free throws by Searcy, while the Tigers scored eight points during the same period and led 12-5 at the 2:16 mark. Two free throws by David Richards finished off the scoring for the Canes while North Allegheny hit two threes and led after one quarter 18-7. Anthony Harvey got the Canes on the board first in the second period with a put-back at 6:51 but the Hurricanes didnt take another shot for two minutes as they turned it over twice and twice missed the front of one-and-ones. North Allegheny managed two twos and a three and upped their lead to 25-9 at the 4:49 mark of the second quarter. New Castle made three field goals and six free throws the rest of the half and the Tigers matched the Canes with 12 and the score at the half was 37-21, North Allegheny. The Canes pressed and trapped and created a few scoring opportunities but when they missed a shot a Tiger was usually there for the rebound. New Castle opened the second half by taking it to the hoop as Richards drove and was fouled. He made the second of two at 7:50. The Canes pressure created a steal and Anthony Harvey then drove and was fouled. He too only hit the second free throw and the score was 37-23 North Allegheny. The Tigers scored at 6:17 then back to back buckets by Spencer Lane and Searcy closed the gap to 12, 39-27 at 5:37. North Allegheny then hit a three and after Lane answered with a three of his own the Tigers reeled off 11 unanswered points and moved out to a 23 point lead, 53-30 with 1:01 to play in the third quarter. Anthony Harvey on a steal made a basket and was fouled. He made the three point play and the score after three periods was 53-33 North Allegheny. After a steal to open the final quarter Tom Canal was fouled and he hit both ends of his one-and-one. After a Tigers miss Hakeem Fitzpatrick made one of two free throws making the margin 17, 53-36. North Allegheny then passed the ball over and through the Canes attempt at trapping as they held the ball for 1:20 until they were fouled. Two free throws upped the lead to 55-36 at 5:26. Anthony Harvey scored at 4:55 after a steal. North Allegheny worried more about holding the ball than scoring made just four free throws the rest of the way while the Canes scored four points on a basket by William Martin and a hoop by Fitzpatrick.
Notes: Demetrius Searcy led the Canes with 12 points and Anthony Harvey added 11. Searcy and Spencer Lane led New Castle with three rebounds each. Searcy had games earlier this season of 11 and 12 rebounds, but the 67", 64" inside players of NA kept him off the boards.
