Schuylkill Co. Republicanherald story:
In Class AAAA, New Castle's Jaleesa Sams makes her third all-state
appearance and her second on the first team. Ashley Gale, a La Salle recruit, was chosen
as the player of the year after leading Cheltenham to the state title and scoring 27
points in the PIAA championship game.
Like Gale, Council Rock North's Addie Micir makes the move from the second team a year ago
to the first team. They are joined by Neumann-Gorretti's Gloria Brown and Abington
Heights' Becky Burke. Brown was the Philadelphia Catholic League South Division MVP and
has signed with North Carolina State. Burke, a junior, has committed to South Carolina.
Luann Grybowski was chosen as the coach of the year after guiding New
Castle to the PIAA District 7 (WPIAL) championship and a 28-2 record.
The Class AAAA second team includes six Division I recruits.
Claysburg-Kimmel's Lacey Claar was voted the Class A player of the year after setting a
Blair County scoring record of 2,187 points and leading the Lady Bulldogs to the PIAA
semifinals. The first team includes Dayton signee April Austin of PIAA runner-up
Pittsburgh North Catholic, while Mark Moschella of PIAA champion Bishop Guilfoyle picked
up coach of the year honors.
The all-state teams were selected following two rounds of nominations and voting by sports
writers and broadcasters.

TipOff champs 52-33 over Hopewell
Hopewell the defending WPIAL and PIAA champions in class AAA returned four
starters from last season and were hoping to exact a measure of revenge for their only
loss in the state of Pennsylvania last season. Last year in the TipOff Tourney New Castle
topped the Lady Vikings. This year the Canes had their way again. Led by Jaleesa Sams' 20
points and Abby Allen's 13, New Castle looked strong from start to finish, holding
Hopewell to just four points in the first quarter and six in the fourth to start the
season 2-0.
