The 2001-2002 season for the Canes got into full swing this weekend at the Ne-Ca-Hi Field house. The Hurricanes destroyed everything and everyone in their path. New Castle went 2-0 and won the tip-off tournament.
The Canes opened up against a short handed Perry team. The Commodores were minus a couple of players due to the football teams success, they were playing for a berth to the state championship football game. The excitement level of the Cane players was through the roof. They were happy the season was finally there. The Canes came out strong on offense. Dom Joseph had a game high 22 pts. Dante Spino saw his first action as a Runnin Red Hurricane. Spino came out strong and scored 14 pts. Hoover Gibson and Mark DeMonaco also put out good efforts. Marky poured in 18 pts from the point guard spot. Although the Canes played well on offense, the defense was mediocre, but not at the level the coaches want it to be. Never the less it was a solid victory and set up a marquee match-up against George Junior Republic.
Only into the second game of the year and the Canes had a huge test with Gorge Junior, who is now competing in the Quad-A. The Canes were focused and ready to face the challenge. The game started out slow while the teams traded free throws. Dom Joseph exploded in the first quarter going 5-5 from the field. A DeMonaco three and good defense gave the Canes a 22-8 first quarter lead. In the 2nd hit a back breaking three and got some breathing room and took a 41-21 lead into halftime in front of a shocked field house crowd. Chris Cain took over the 3rd quarter with his deflections that led to steals in the half court trap. He finished with 18 pts. And for a sophomore show great signs of what is to come. Vojtech Hybler showed all 66" of his height and played good defense blocking 5 shots in two games. The Canes played good team defense and forced over 40 turnovers in the tournament. Dom Joseph was named tourney MVP. DeMonaco received the Hustle Award. Cain and Gibson and the two aforementioned were all named to the all tournament team.
The Canes take to the road on Tuesday to face Ellwood City. For what people may think to be an awkward game the Canes are focused on doing their job and winning staying undefeated. On Friday the highly talented Warren Harding, Ohio comes to the field house.
On the injury front the Canes will be without Leon Ward (Mononucleosis) for at least 1-2 weeks and Joe Carter will miss another game, but will be back at practice Wednesday.
