Well Canes fans another exciting basketball season in here. And there is reason to be excited. Finally the season is upon us and all the hard work these kids have put into the program is about to payoff. Summer workouts are over, driving to Shaler twice a week is over, and now its the time when everything counts. This summer was a good one. We played well over 40 games and went to various team camps. And be sure that coach Sarandrea will have this team running on all cylinders as the season quickly approaches.
This years team is a senior laden team. With six seniors and eight letterman out of the top nine guys, expectations are high once again for the New Castle Basketball Program. Of the eight returning letterman are tri-captains Dom Joseph, Mark Demonaco, and the ever improving Hoover Gibson. Joe Cater and Dante Spino also will join these senior lettermen. Vojtech Hybler is an exchange student and obviously did not letter last year, but continues to impress not only the coaching staff but also other teammates. Three underclass returning letterman that return from last years team are Leon Ward, Ralph Currie, and Chris Cain. This team is very experienced and has been around each other for quite awhile. This team knows how to win and their main concern is winning. They are not concerned how winning gets done, just as long as they win They are happy.
Last Saturday the Canes traveled to Uniontown to scrimmage the highly touted Uniontown High. They fared well and the game gave us a good point of where we are and what we need to work on. On Monday 11/26 the Canes will travel to Farrell for a tri-scrimmage with Farrell and Beaver Falls. The Tip-off tourney is the beginning of the season and has some of the strongest teams in Pa. On Fri. Blackhawk and George Junior will do battle in the first match-up followed by Perry against New Castle. This opening tournament will be very exciting and display a lot of great athletes.
A couple of notes for the Canes, Joe Cater has been sidelined recently for a dislocated shoulder, but may possibly be ready for the opener. Dom Joseph is suffering from a sprained ankle, but he is coming along good and will be healthy for Friday. The season is here and this team has been waiting a long time for it to begin. I know the fans of New Castle are ready for it to start. The kids are getting excited and the locker room talk is that they cant wait for the packed games at the field house and the tremendous fans to get into the games. They understand what it is and how important the fans are to the program and are really looking forward to the games. These guys will continue to work hard at practice and will see everyone Friday night.
